Tom's SYFFAList

July 2015

Tom Doz | August 4, 2015

I swear that I'm trying to be consistent with my SYFFAList, but the summer's busy. I was going to scrap the project all together and then two things happened:

  1. July (and June) have been insane for music releases. Some days I have to pinch myself because so much great music is coming out. If you can't find any good music right now go jump off of your roof on to a bicycle seat.
  2. SYFFAL is all shiny and new and I have to build my SYFFAList. I don't want to brag (yes I do), but have you seen this shit? The cover art in our album reviews fucking stream music. And now we have a comment section!

So go explore. BUT not before you listen to this playlist. Because I missed June I couldn't adhere to my normally 10 song limit - I had to include 2 more tracks.

Roger Lion - A Dead Man's Song: Roger Lion is a project from Joe Pernice and Budo. I may have never listened to this if it wasn't for their AMAZING bio that showed up in my box a couple of week's ago. IF you are a band read this...and then go make your shitty bio more interesting. Your label may fight you tooth and nail because many times they don't like that you show personality, but fuck them....it's your music. If I read one description of a song that says it's an 'ethereal slow burner' I'm going to puke all over my keyboard. Oh yeah, this song is the terts.

Lo Noom - Dreary: So, Joel reviewed Lo Noom's album and I didn't read his verbal fellating - I just clicked play on the soundcloud embed and was transported to a beach in the Maldives. I became more and more addicted to this album until the point I had to bring it up in conversation with Joel. I said something like: "That Lo Noom album is the balls on the banana" and Joel replied: "Yeah dude, I can't believe he's 17." WHAT!? This asshole is 17? I probably should have read Joel's review. But seriously, Fuck Lo Noom and his patchy face stubble....I'm jealous I never got talent like this.

Tame Impala - Let It Happen: When I first heard Tame Impala's new album Currents I couldn't get past this first track. I tend to exaggerate on the this site a lot, but I promise I rewound this track 5 times to the part between 4.00 - 5.15. That transition is mind altering. This track is in the running for my best of 2015.

CHVRCHES - Leave A Trace: Do you ever say to yourself in a Danny Glover voice 'I'm too old to like this shit'?  I always say this when I listen to CVRCHES, but this track makes me want to break out my skinny jeans and high tops and forget that I woke up with a stiff lower back this morning. What a fucking perfect song.

Maximum Balloon - Let It Grow (Featuring Karen O and Tunde Adebimpe): Do you remember Dark Night Of The Soul? It was that Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse collaboration from 5 years ago? Well, I was fucking addicted to it, and this song sounds like it should have been on that album. I REALLY love Karen O with this vibe.

Steve Gunn - Lurker: This track is 2 years old, but I just heard for the first time earlier in the month. If you ever dreamed of a scenario where Jimmy Page, armed with an openly tuned acoustic, jams with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards in a coffee shop, this is probably what it'd sound like.

Palace - Kiloran: Sometimes I just want my music to sound like it was recorded in an empty church.

Destroyer - Dream Lover: Of course you love Destroyer for the horns. BUT 'dems some E-Street Band horns. Dan Bejar is the perfect combination of extremely odd and extremely addicting.

Sorority Noise - Art School Wannabe: Holy dog shit on the bottom of your Sperrys, that chorus. Gimmie more!

Bully - I Remember: I remember the 90's when young chicks had edge and could be sexy beneath a huge flannel. Now they all seem full of desperation and ass cheeks hanging out of too highly cut off jean shorts. I hope this Bully chick dresses in flannels because she is cool. She has edge. And I hope she sets the trend of wearing more clothes by the time my daughter is a teenager.

9 Theory - At Home In The Dark (feat. Scarub and Dawn Mitschele): I'm gong to leave you with two 9 Theory tracks. 'At Home In The Dark' is like a bridge where the indie world and rap world can co-exist in harmony, with each world inviting the other in for a taste of their prized nectar. One is apple flavored. One is orange flavored. The apple lovers surprisingly like the orange and wouldn't mind tasting more and vice versa.

Jason Mraz - I Won't Give Up (9 Theory re-mix): Don't you skip over this because it's a Jason Mraz song. C'mon don't be a shit-head. I will unabashedly admit that I like Jason Mraz, but he strikes me as a person who wants to more zen then he sounds. In my opinion, this remix achieves that ambition. This shit if Phil Jackson in a bath tub.
