Bandcamp Artist of the Week: We Are Trees
By: Tom Dozois
Okay, I admit it. I decided to check out the We Are Trees latest EP Girlfriend because there is a picture of some naked 70’s chic on the album cover. I sure am glad that I followed my penis brain for pointing me in the right direction.
While listening to We Are Trees it’s hard to not to draw comparisons to Grizzly Bear because lead singer and songwriter, James Nee’s voice sounds eerily similar to Daniel Rossen’s. The first time I heard this band I seriously had to make sure that it was not another one of Rossen’s side projects. After doing some research I must say that I like this band even more. Their Facebook page is riddled with sarcasm. Apparently the band shares the same names with the cast of Friends and they seem to have tourettes, but rather than yelling our COCKFuckINBALLS, they yell out random NBAers like HAKEEM OLAJUWON!!! I think I like these witty Fucks.
MOOKIE BLALOCK!
We Are Trees have two EPs up on their Bandcamp site: Boyfriend and Girlfriend. The production is haunting and empty while the drums have a tribal like feel that perfectly sync up to the strumming acoustic guitar, ala Fleet Foxes. James Nee’s voice is outstanding and a perfect amount of reverb is added to the vocals. The self-harmonization is remarkable.
Personally I like the Girlfriend EP a little better than Boyfriend EP, but both are great. Each are available for $1 so don’t be a cheap ass mother fucker. If you like Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear then I promise you’ll like these bastards.
POOH RICHARDSON! (haha…Pooh)
