So the other day I was making my daily web round when, on a whim, I checked out a link about a rapper named Earl. I figure I could go in, see what was what, probably a shitty re-tread sound or some horribly schlocky Drake-esque rapper. Much to my surprise I was treated to something wonderful. Earl, also known as Earl Sweatshirt, is a 15 or 16 year old skate punk from South Central LA making the rap equivalent of Black Flag, Circle Jerks, TSOL, etc. It is a big middle finger to the rap status quo, it is what NWA was if they were obsessed with skating and raised on skate vidoesinstead of middle class cats playing the gangsta roll.
I posted his video on the site the other day, for a quick taste:
Since then I have become obsessed with getting my hands on all the material I could. I found out he is part of a crew called Odd Future and a few sites to explore further:
The Tumblr site lead me to their albums. It appears that the whole crew is young kids, who appear to not give a Fuck about the musics past, future or present, only what they create and their world. They are the embodiement of what I feel has been missing, not just from rap, but from music in general. The sense of rebellion for the Fuck of it. They want to destroy your idols and mores. Much like society and sharks, art can only survive if it moves forward, and sometimes to do that you have to destroy everything that has existed up to now. I dont know for sure if they are that truth, but its the closest I have seen since the 80s.
I have included two of the better albums I downloaded from their site. I hope you enjoy them and are as excited about them as I am.
Earl Sweatshirt - EARL
Tyler The Creator - BASTARD
