Let me start by saying this, if you’ve only listened to The New Mastersounds’ albums then you are missing how truly amazing these guys are. Last night, one of my last nights in the Los Angeles area before moving to San Diego, I ventured out to my all time favorite L.A. venue, The Troubadour to check out the funk/soul/ jam band The New Mastersounds.
Often times I’m the comical dancer in my group of friends with my truly “whiteboy” style of dancing. Well, I couldn’t have felt more at home at this show, bouncing around to the amazing sounds of TNM (or The New Mastersounds, if you don’t get acronyms). I knew next to nothing about them going into the show, aside from what I heard on their upcoming album Breaks From The Border, and like I said earlier, it doesn’t do them justice. The 4 part group makes even the most shy person in the room at least tap their feet and bob their heads during the live show (in case you didn’t know I’m the shy one, and man was I dancing and sweating up a storm).
Anyone who is a fan of the jam band world knows that words are not of importance, which is probably why throughout the whole night you may not have heard them sing more than 250 words worth of lyrics. It’s about feeling the funk, and flow of the music, and letting your body take over. Based out of Leeds, and lead by guitarist and producer, Eddie Roberts, I was reverted to my college days of bouncing around to jam band music. Now this isn’t the Grateful Dead or Phish, let’s not get it twisted. These guys come from a different realm, one of funk and soul, but had everyone in the room letting their body’s flow to the music.
In addition to killing it on stage there was a presence of pure joy eminating from all 4 members on stage; Eddie Roberts (Lead Guitar), Simon Allen (Drums), Pete Shand (Bass), and Joe Tatton (Keys). Individually their resumes include a long list of successful musicians, and as a group there is a harmony that can only be proven by the fluid chord changes that seem to occur without any hesitation.
I will end my review of their show last night at the Troubadour the same way I started it, if you haven’t seen these guys live, you haven’t experienced all that they have to give. Follow their tour schedule here for when they will be rolling through your city.
