You know who never got any lovin' in the 80s? John Hughes' red headed bastard step child of a movie "Some Kind of Wonderful". I suppose dismissing it as a male centric Pretty in Pink carbon copy is an insult to the Hughes legacy but let's take a look at the eveidence:
The soundtracks (and the films end results) are really the only difference when it comes to the longevity of these interchangeable movies. Pretty In Pink was chock full of epic jams by The Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen, OMD, and INXS where poor ass Some Kind of wonderful was saddled with bands like Blue Room, The Furniture, and the vastly underrated yet commonly unknown Flesh For Lulu. Personally I say it is fair time for people to recognize the strength of Some Kind of Wonderful and it's music. What better way to do so than have LA Girlfriend cover Lulu's "I Go Crazy". She's a dreamboat that I care far too much about to continue hiding my feelings under a pork pie hat and some snazzy vets. Time for me to go for it John Hughes style: LA Girlfriend, the only thing I care about in this goddamn life are me and my drums and you...and this brilliant cover.
The song is the Flesh For Lulu love anthem, "I Go Crazy." Content speaking, the song is about going crazy when a special someone is no longer in your life. The original version is lighthearted and overall very catchy but when I think back to my experiences of being without someone I care about, the reality isn't a synth pop dream filled with feel good guitar solos and a guy dressed as a punk, playing the keyboard like a boss. My experiences have been frustrating, emotional, and on the verge of slightly paranoid. Add an injection of noise and a kiss of Adrenaline, the L.A. Girlfriend interpretation of "I Go Crazy" is, what I feel to be, a true, love-driven crazy.
