Bandcamp Artist of the Week: Francisco The Man
By: Brandon Backhaus
It was on assignment for a Syffal show review of The Fling that I was introduced to Francisco the Man. As opener for those dreamy bastards, Francisco the Man’s driving funky bass had my jaw on the floor, as served as the perfect compliment to the washed out indie rock buffet. I’ve been meaning to do this write-up since Del and I both agreed that this band was one to check out. And if you start out two for two, your Syffal swag card is practically in the mail. And with one of those bad boys, let me tell you, you’re invited to all of the orgies, cocaine parties, and your lifetime supply of ham sandwiches is almost assuredly in the mail.
I kid. But seriously, with indie rock boyfriends like The Fling, it’s more like I’m waiting for my invite to the cool table. Franciso the Man rides a highly skilled line between straight up shoegaze and funk. It’s fuzz funk. Ok, I made that up but it’s kind of a good description, if I must say so myself. Néstor Romero’s driving bass lines, do much to set The Man apart from your run of the mill indie Fucktards. It’s the mustard on the proverbial hotdog, the hotdog being these grungy fuckers sex appeal. Scotty Cantino magic ass is one part Don Quixote, and one part the lady selling bacon-wrapped street dogs outside the bar at closing time. Those are lofty comparisons but, like my adoration for bacon-wrapped street dogs, I’ve come to really appreciate these dickshit’s music.
So far Bandcamp has two Francisco the Man EP releases, 2010’s With Friends Like You, and 2011’s Broken Arrows. While only two tracks Broken Arrows seems to offer up a view into the progression of the band, both sonically and quality-wise. While With Friends Like You was my introduction to Francisco the Man, Broken Arrows simply sounds great. And it’s a name your own price release, so go to bandcamp.com, choose a hundred bucks and download that baby! These Romeos are worth it!
Also if your in LA, catch them 3.19 at the Silverlake Lounge.
