Favorite Songs - 2015

1st Quarter

Staff | March 30, 2015

The first quarter of 2015 has been one big hairy, thrusting cooze. While there are all these amazing albums dropping like deuces on the gilded throne of life, me and Tom are having all of these heavy stressful life changes happening, and it's fucking terrifying.

So where most of us at SYFFAL all live thousands of miles apart, and met on the internet and hold the majority of our friendship within the confines of the internet, Tom and I are real life concert besties.

Seeing as we're both married motherfucking parents and don't go out much, except for the aforementioned concerts, we're BFFs in actual AND virtual life bro.

And now Tom and his family are moving to a completely different state and we'll be forced to play our brolove out on a like 95% virtual basis.

This sucks balls for me. Sure I'm happy for Tom to set up shop in a new location with different beers, BUT TOM WAS MY CONCERT BESTIE! WHO DO I CONCERT WITH NOW?!?!?!?!

I'd like to pour a sip of this 40oz called THE BEST SONGS OF Q1 2015 out for my best friend Tom.

JUST GO HIT PLAY ON ALL OF THESE PLAYLISTS AT ONE TIME AND THEN IMAGINE WHAT METH FEELS LIKE, K?

BYE TOM! LOVE YOU BRO!

5. The King Khan & BBQ Show - AloneAgain: Lo-Fi doo-wap? Yes...more of that please.

4. St. Lenox - I Still Dream of the 90's: There has to be one pop album that shakes me to the core every year. Listen to this track and find out why. Plus...the 90's dude.

3. Mike Pace and the Child Actors - King of Corona: I'm a sucker for piano pop songs. This one reminds me of John Cale's "Paris, 1919".

2. Sarah Bethe Nelson - Paying: Over the last few years, I've fallen in love with Mazzy Star-esque dreamy ballads. This is one of the best I've heard.

1. Kuzin - Cavity: It's a silly little love song. I'm cool with that.

Joel Frieders

5. True Deceiver - Tiny Black Drone: I sing "TI-NY BLACK DRONE" constantly, but as creepy as I sound singing it, I can't hold a candle to how beautifully creepy this is on its own.

4. Saycet - Cite Radieuse: I'm walking on sidewalk tiles that light up as I step on them, I am Billie Jean, I am my lover.

3. That Noise - World On Fire: This song makes me wanna quit my job and start a Mutemath cover band and make people shit themselves.

2. Maribou State - Rituals: Holy shit I wanna burn the clothes I'm wearing and wrap everything in aluminum foil and squirt baby oil all over everything.

1. Twin Shadow - Eclipse: I love how pained dude sounds, which is somehow inspiring, but I love the sweat even more.

Tom Doz

5. Matthew E. White - Take Care Of My Baby: This song should be played in bedrooms across the country by couples who do not lady/manscape. It's pure retro sensh.

4. The Amazing - Winter Dress: Holy euphoria dripping through the valleys of Matthew McConaughy's abz. A guitar slide hasn't affected me to this degree since high school when I was getting some over the bra action while listening to Mazzy Star's 'Fade Into You.'

3. Ryley Walker - Sweet Satisfaction: When you hear Walker talk in interviews he reminds me of that free-sprited stoner dude from Dazed and Confused, but holy shit, when you hear this dude sing his man voice booms with maturity and purpose. It's like a cross between Tim Buckley and Jim Morrison being backed my some sort of jammy-folky-jazzlicous inspired pot of potpourri used as a center piece on the tables in a smokey lounge.

2. Patrick Watson - Love Song For Robots: Who the Fuck is this guy and how was he able to create a soundtrack to the cloud of stress the has invaded my life these last 2 weeks? Sometimes I feel my blood pressure escalating and then I make myself sit down and listen to this track and run micro machine trucks over the goose bumps on my legs. Stop looking at me like that! It takes my mind off things!

1. Father John Misty - When You're Smiling and Astride Me: The best song the greatest modern-day song writer has ever written. Daaahahahrrrrrlin', it's true.

Brandon Backhaus

5. Kendrick Lamar - Hood Politics: I'm all BOO BOO way too much. I'm almost annoying myself. Almost. On the dead homies. (no stream available)

4. s.al - jungle dreams + voice: If I could give you four records from quarter 1, I would've included s.al's fear, uncertain. And this mellow missive is the missile in the launcher.

3. Action Bronson - Terry: This is just one of those chill hell yeah "don't hurt me again" records, and I'm widdit.

2. Jose Gonzalez: With The Ink Of A Ghost: This album taste like making waffles on a Saturday morning with a beautiful girl pouring your coffee and walking around your kitchen in your old Tshirt.

1. Open Mike Eagle - Ziggy Starfish (Anti-Anxiety Raps): This might be my favorite song of the year already. I just randomly bust into a performance of the chorus around town like a fucking idiot. Plus dat beat!

Johnny Symmes

5. Open Mike Eagle - Dark Comedy Late Show (prod. Exile): This is sort of a remix to a song from Dark Comedy but OME drops some gems on this one.

4. The Static Tones - Death On High Heels: If I was a stripper, I would give your mom a lapdance to this song.

3. Stay Tuned - Wonder Years: Don't sleep on this shit. Nostalgia. Good shit.

2. Wiredogs - Fear Is A Lie: This song makes me feel invicible. I want to jump out of an airplane or some shit.

1. Leather Corduroys - In Da Club: I forgot to review this shit but trust me it's legit. Check for these dudes for real.

Ralph Perez

5. Big Sean w/Drake - Blessings: Sean barley missed my Q1 albums list, blame that on Kendrick. I feel no guilt in saying he is one of my favorite fun rappers. Dude knows how to make you smile, chuckle at the punchlines and feel like dancing. G.O.O.D Music for sure!

4. Drake - Legend: Love him or hate him, there is no denying the dude can write a fucking catchy ass song almost EVERY DAMN TIME. So, Drake puts his GOAT hat on, and reps his catalog and home turf of Canada Ey.

3. Ceschi w/ Sage Francis - Barely Alive: This a song for anyone who has been kicked in the fucking balls/vagina by life and gotten back up and told it to Fuck the Fuck off!!! Ceschi and Sage hold each other up while they shed the weight of woes. So much feels.

2. Kanye West - All Day: This shit makes me ready for Yeezy season!! Put this on while im doing dishes and somethings getting broke!!! Ye went from tender to fucking cats up. Love it.

1. Action Bronson - Actin Crazy: Bam Bam comes out the gate with his dick in his hand, his green screen on fire dunking on giant lizards, and spitting bars son!!!
