Those of you who know me, know I love me some horns sections. Just a few hours before heading back to the west coast, I headed over to the Paradise Rock Club in Boston, MA to check out some amazing Soul/R&B/Blues artists that have yet to grace us on the west coast: Dwight & Nicole and Jesse Dee. There I was, after Dwight & Nicole's set entranced by Jesse Dee's crazy hair do and funky riffs, the beautiful Ms. Nicole Nelson is right next to me as I'm snapping photos and movin' and groovin' to Jesse on stage. What do I say? A million thoughts run through my mind of what I can say not to sound like a total moron and here's what I spit out "Your set was amazing!" Really Pete? Really? How many times have they heard that? Where is your creativity? Tongue tied and star struck that's the best I could come up with. My moment has passed, just like that time that I bumped into Jenny Lewis in the VIP tent at Coachella circa 2008 and I couldn't spit out anything. Damn you women with beautiful voices and your power to render me speechless!
Ok now we'll move onto the show:
Dwight & Nicole,
All I can say about your set is mind blown, KABOOM! I've listened to your album and nothing on there really could have prepared me for what I experienced the other night. You are versatile, captivating, full of so much energy and your vocals compliment each other exceptionally. The pipes on you, Nicole, could melt a mans heart, and it may have last night. Dwight your flying V Gibson and your deep soulful voice are the perfect compliment to Nicole. And let's not forget about that horns section, John (Saxophone) and Scott (Trumpet) Aruda, and on guitar Milt Reder, a legend himself. There is nothing fake about your sound or your lyrics and for that I am grateful.
Mr. Jesse Dee,
Bittersweet Batch is something that was given to me by the one and only Mr. Andrew Cleak, and I have since shared that album with anyone who will listen to me. I thought I knew exactly what I was going to walk into with you. All I knew were the tracks on Bittersweet Batch, I had no idea the arsenal of songs that hadn't even been out yet. Sharing the Aruda brothers with Dwight & Nicole was a double dose of amazing for me. Jesse, not that you need my validation , but you are the real deal. Your vocals sound exactly the way they do on the album, something I attest to a great musician. There are too many people that "clean up" their sound when recording an album that when you see them live you are let down. Not in your case. Your emotion can be felt in every word that you sing and that sweet sweet guitar sound is mesmerizing.
To Dwight, Nicole, & Jesse:
I plead to you, show the west coast what I had the pleasure of seeing while back east for Thanksgiving. Your sound will fit in just fine out here on the left coast. LA has The Mint, the perfect venue for your sound. San Diego, Santa Barbara, and San Francisco would love to have you as well, I'm just partial to LA, well because that's where I am, and I'm being selfish. It doesn't matter where you come on the west coast, we welcome you with open arms.
Pete
