The Common Loon is the state bird of Minnesota. It also is the band of two dudez named Matthew Campbell and Robert Hirschfeld that met in Kindegarten and started playing music together. Besides having the most white-sounding names ever, they are also into all things Avian. All things bro; poop, influenza, and regurgitation.
50% of what I wrote above may not have been based on actual facts, but I’m curious to know more about these distinguished sounding lads because their album The Long Dream of Birds is off the hook. I'm expecting to their answers to my interview questions any day so that we can all get to know them on an intimate level.
Anyhoo, let’s chat about music. When I first heard the first track, Dinosaur Vs. Early Man I was I got all weird and tingly. The chorus hits you with a shower harmonies that is as satisfying as a massage with a happy ending. Upon this track’s completion I knew that I was going to dig these Loons. I immediately headed to their Bandcamp page and streamed the rest of their album.
The rest of the LP is layered with some dreamy guitar lushness and layered vocals that are as satisfying as a massage with a happy ending. Wait, did I use that one already? Oh well, I think that Common Loon should change their name to Rubbers in China Town.
I have digressed yet again.
Something about this band gives me A.D.D.
ANYHOO, stream this album people (and eventually purchase it). Fer Realz. The first track is still my favorite, but in particular, also check out: Lisa’s Pixie Cut for it’s pleasant swirling sound; it almost sounds like a shoegazey version of an Enya track, Mexico for it’s XX inspired guitar riff and Michael Stipe sounding lecture, and Happy Ending because….well….we all enjoy Happy Endings.
Am I right?
