I've never really understood how people like Billy Corgan can play every instrument on an entire album, or even imagine what every instrument should be going on an album. Like, I understand composition and I understand the process of music writing, but to fully understand different instruments and allow a half dozen or more pieces of wood or metal to have a peaceful orgy together - that shit baffles me.
Sometimes I wonder if my brain is only limited in being able to understand this shit because I don't have any experience playing a shit load of instruments on one particular song. Sure I can play guitar, bass, piano, drums, hand drums and of course the skin flute, but never all on one track.
Why the Fuck am I rambling? Fuck YOU REGGIE IM NOT RAMBLING!
I'm prefacing my feelings about the latest from Tommy Guerrero because I find him fucking fascinating.
Yes, he is known for being an awesome skateboarder turned musician who is still working in the boarding industry, but I really don't give a Fuck about that. I'm fascinated with his music shits.
Tommy Guerrero creates funky, down tempo, hip hop flavored instrumental music that since I first heard him, has completely entertained and become part of me. I'm not saying I masturbate to his music, but because of what listening to his music entails, I feel that I could describe to you my masturbating to his music while listening to his music.
His music has never been fully force fucking your fucking face to listen, it isn't what you put on when you want to get jacked up or want to lift weights or wear a wolf t-shirt. Tommy's music is accessible. Tommy's music is what you listen to when you need to either concentrate fully on something or think about absolutely fucking nothing.
Tommy's latest album, Lifeboats and Follies, is like a smooth fingernail.
What the Fuck is a smooth fingernail?
A smooth fingernail is probably the fingernail on your ring finger that you are constantly stroking with your thumb. It's peaceful, it's relaxing, and it’s what you do when you aren't thinking about anything in particular.
While this is a shit ton more jazz-influenced than his previous efforts in my opinion, I'm in lust with it just the same. It doesn't feel forced, it feels like there were a few tracks where he had to look at the clock and say "shit I could play this for hours, I better cut it off or the album will be one long fucking track."
I don't mind a fucking bits yosepf. Tommy G is who I would want to be if I had the time and talent to do it all myself.
I would love to hug this dude some time. Not in a creepy, hands on his back in a lustful embrace type hug. But in an "atta boy, your music is on when I'm naked and stuff" kind of way.
Is that creepy?
Fuck YOU REGGIE!
